IEC 61850 Communication Networks and Systems in Substations

The advancing global IEC 61850 standard for communication in substations will bring open, Interoperable systems and flexible architectures to the substation automation domain.

Today, power utilities operate more and more globally and require flexible, future-proof systems to cope with changing requirements, philosophies and technologies. This calls for a standard ensuring essential features such as interoperability between devices from different suppliers, free allocation of functions, capability to follow the fast changing communication technology and ease of engineering and maintenance. Utilities' investments are safeguarded by the long term stability of the standard.

ABB has, from the beginning, taken a leading role in the elaboration of a corresponding standard in the field of substation automation, the IEC 61850. The standard is set to be published by the end of 2003. ABB will continue to carry out the elaboration, implementation and verification of interoperability in line with the finalization of IEC 61850.
