Sustainability is integral to all aspects of our business. We strive to balance economic, environmental and social objectives and integrate them into our daily business decisions to create value for all our stakeholders.
ABB South Africa, which is 20% owned by women’s empowerment company WIPHOLD (a Black empowerment investment made in 2002), manufactures and supplies power and automation technology products and specialises in electricity infrastructure and industrial automation projects. The company has manufacturing facilities in South Africa and employs more than 1,500 people.
Sustainability at ABB encompasses everything that the company does from the energy efficient products it manufactures and its operations where it minimises environmental impact to the economic contribution it makes to society.
ABB acknowledges its broader role in communities and engages with a number of organisations including those representing business initiatives for energy efficiency as well as a large number of non-profit organisations and tertiary institutions established to develop technical skills, promote environmental awareness and responsibility as well as energy-efficieny among the youth and care and support of orphans of HIV/AIDS.
Commitment towards conservation of scarce resources including energy and water are prominent features at ABB South Africa's green building head office, manufacturing and logistics centre at Longmeadow, Johannesburg, which makes extensive use of solar heating and rainwater harvesting. The building won an eta award from Eskom and the Department of Energy for it contribution to energy efficiency. It is a shining example of energy efficiency, incorporating many of ABB's energy effiiciency products such as a building management system, variable speed drives, high efficiency motors and power factor correction.
