Rail motors go underground

One hundred and ninety of London Underground's newest trains will be fitted with ABB AC traction motors as part of Metronet's £15 billion programme to upgrade nine of the network's twelve lines.

The motors will be fitted to trains running on the subsurface District, Circle, Metropolitan and Hammersmith & City lines.

ABB won the £28.6 million order from Bombardier Transportation, which is building the new trains in its Derby plant.
The motors are based on a Bombardier design and will be integrated into the propulsion and control system to be manufactured in Sweden.
Traction motors typically power the drive wheels and are usually fitted on each driven axle.
The first of the new trains will be come into service in 2009. These, together with new signalling, are expected to improve journey times.
