ABB wins order for advanced combined-cycle power station in UK

National Power awards turnkey contract to build 1,500-MW power plant.

Zurich, Switzerland, October 6 1997 - ABB, the international electrical engineering company, has won an order to build a 1,500-megawatt combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power station at Staythorpe, U.K., northeast of Nottingham. The turnkey order, valued at about US$ 700 million, was placed by National Power PLC.

The power station is to be developed by ABB in partnership with National Power. It will use ABB’s GT26 advanced cycle gas turbine technology with the highest state-of-the-art efficiency. This will contribute to National Power’s drive to reduce costs while continuing to produce cleaner power.

Construction is scheduled to begin early next year on the site of two former coal-fired plants. When fully operational in 2003, the plant will produce enough electricity for up to two million people.

ABB will deliver the gas turbine equipment, boilers, steam turbines, the associated heat recovery steam generators, the overall power plant control system, balance of plant equipment, and civil work. ABB is also responsible for the engineering and the complete installation and commissioning.

The order strengthens ABB’s position as a supplier of high-efficiency, low-emission combined-cycle power generation systems. ABB has previously won orders for its GT26/24 gas turbines in the U.S., the U.K., Korea, Germany and New Zealand. Staythorpe will be the sixth gas-fired power plant delivered by ABB in the U.K. since the country’s electricity supply sector was privatized in 1990.

The contract was placed with ABB Power Generation Ltd, United Kingdom, a member of ABB’s global Power Generation Segment which employs more than 43,000 people worldwide and with orders billion. (End)
