ABB begins control modernization project at INVISTA’s KA Plant in the UK

2003-10-27 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, will begin the modernization of the control systems of the KA plant located in Cleveland, UK. This co-managed, turnkey project is a joint INVISTA-ABB initiative and is one of the key elements for the upgrade of INVISTA’s intermediate plants at Wilton to make the UK site one of the most competitive in the world. For the KA plant this includes converting the plant from boric acid based technology to hydrogenation.

This will be the seventh, and final, facility at Wilton to have undergone new automation development based on ABB INFI 90 Open Control. The first comprised the Hexamethylene Diamine (HMD) plant where, in 1996/7, a complete automation upgrade was project managed, installed and commissioned, followed by similar projects aimed at improving environmental protection and plant performance.

“The redevelopment and expansion of the plant is considerable,” said ABB’s project manager Philip Dadswell. “The INVISTA-ABB Initiative will continue to drive toward improved productivity and reduced costs. At every
stage ABB works with the client to achieve shared objectives from project justification to system engineering, procurement, installation, training and commissioning.”

ABB’s scope of supply at the KA plant comprises front end design study, I/E engineering design and commissioning, control system design, building and commissioning, network consultancy, instrumentation design, safety system supply and integration, technical support, training and on-site construction activities.

Selected by INVISTA to ensure continuity of its automation development on a global basis, the ABB INFI 90 control system provides the company with a stable automation platform for the management of critical and complicated chemical processes. The ABB solution is also fully compatible and upgradeable within ABB’s state-
of-the-art Industrial IT system architecture.
