ATV has made venture investments in the energy infrastructure and emerging cleantech sectors. The following presents both the investments that are still active and those from which ATV has exited.

Persimmon Technologies

Persimmon Technologies is a leading provider of vacuum robotics and Hybrid-Field 3D printed motor technology for the semiconductor, solar, LED, and flat panel display equipment markets. Headquartered outside of Boston, Massachusetts, Persimmon’s management team has over 60 years of experience in the development, manufacture and distribution of advanced robotics and automation systems worldwide. Persimmon is also the exclusive reseller for Nidec Sankyo atmospheric robots in the United States.

Trilliant is a smart grid communications company. The company supplies utilities with wireless mesh equipment and management software to enable two-way communication networks throughout the electric grid, improving energy efficiency, lowering operating costs, and allowing the rapid integration of renewable energy resources. Trilliant’s smart grid architecture powers networks for utilities around the world, including over 1.4 million devices spread over 640,000 square kilometers at Hydro One's deployment in Ontario, Canada.

Power Assure

Power Assure is a leading innovator of Dynamic Data Center Optimization software for large enterprises, government agencies and managed service providers. Power Assure's solutions provide visibility, intelligence and dynamic automation to help CIOs, IT directors and facilities managers optimize efficiency, service levels and power consumption within and across data centers. Power Assure is the first ever two-category winner at the Clean Tech Open, winning the “smart power” and “sustainability” categories in 2008. Power Assure also is an AlwaysOn Going Green Silicon Valley 2010 winner.

Pentalum has developed SpiDAR, a revolutionary, cost effective, patent pending, wind LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) system, for remote sensing of wind. The system targets all three main wind farm applications: wind resource assessment, wind farm operation optimization and wind forecasting.

Aquamarine Power

Aquamarine Power is one of the world’s leading wave energy technology developers.  With an energetic, dynamic and innovative team, Aquamarine Power has developed Oyster, a simple buoyant hinged flap installed at sea and designed to deliver clean, sustainable energy from our oceans. Multiple machines create wave farms and connect to an onshore hydroelectric power station. The first 315 kW Oyster technology operated at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) for over 6,000 hours. The second generation Oyster 800 is also being tested at EMEC. Aquamarine Power is vibrant, energetic and ambitious, passionate about making marine renewable energy mainstream. It is one of the few marine energy developers to get wave energy technology off the drawing board and into full scale testing.

ECOtality (NASDAQ: ECTY) is a leader in clean electric transportation and storage technologies that address the world’s global energy challenges. Specializing in the fields of alternative-fuel, hybrid (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and electric vehicles (EV) and infrastructures, ECOtality created the iconic Blink quick-charging system to provide residential and commercial customers with fast, efficient and safe EV power supply. ECOtality is the project manager of The EV Project and will oversee the installation of approximately 14,000 charging stations in 18 major cities and metropolitan areas in six states and the District of Columbia. The project will provide an EV infrastructure to support the deployment of 8,300 EVs. The project is funded by the US Department of Energy through a federal stimulus grant, made possible by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

TaKaDu, an innovator in advanced monitoring solutions for water distribution networks, provides a software-as-a-service (SaaS) solution that can detect and alert in real-time on network faults, leaks, bursts, breaches, faulty meters, and other inefficiencies. TaKaDu’s solution is based on sophisticated cloud-based data analysis and requires no network changes, additional devices or capital expenditure. It leverages multiple data sources including inputs from network operations, online sensor based flow and pressure data and other external influencers such as weather and calendar events. TaKaDu’s solutions have been rolled out by leading water utilities in ten countries and have earned international recognition as an environmentally friendly technology including the Technology Pioneer award from the World Economic Forum in 2011.

Scotrenewables Tidal Power

Scotrenewables is the developer of an innovative floating tidal energy conversion system that provides a step-change reduction in the cost of marine energy. The concept has undergone intensive testing at increasing scales in both laboratory and open ocean environments since its inception in 2002. The concept is now being tested at 250 kW scale at the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney.

ROMO Wind is a product led technology and service company generating its business by improving the performance and increasing the production of wind farms. ROMO focuses in particular on optimizing power generation by technically adjusting wind turbine rotors. There is limited availability in the market of accurate wind measurement technology on wind turbines for assessing, correcting and controlling turbine performance. ROMO Wind owns a unique and patented wind measurement technology capable of highly accurately measuring the speed and direction of the wind that hits the wind turbine. The company has signed contracts with large utility wind farm owners jointly owning approximately 18 GW of wind farm installed capacity – the equivalent of more than four times the entire installed wind power capacity of Denmark.

Nupharo Park

Nupharo Park is a technology park whose goal is to develop direct current and other energy technologies into viable business, reducing energy costs as well as our carbon footprint. The incubator provides resources, facilities and business advice necessary for the successful market entry. Production facilities will provide a unique environment for testing commercial applications and economic viability of new technologies. Startups and investments in Nupharo will be eligible for more than 800 million euros in grants and soft loans for investment, research, labor costs and marketing by 2020.

In 2012, ABB discontinued its funding of GreenVolts, a US-based provider of turnkey concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) systems, because an oversupply of, and plunging prices for, photovoltaic (PV) modules had hurt demand.

Industrial Defender
Industrial Defender provides a suite of integrated products and services dedicated to assuring the availability, reliability and security of critical infrastructure. With a primary focus on enabling enterprises to extend their corporate IT strategy to incorporate control systems environments, Industrial Defender’s cyber security solutions co-exist and interoperate with traditional IT management tools to provide a unified view of enterprise security.

Validus DC Systems
In 2012, ABB acquired the shares in Validus DC Systems it didn't already own. Validus offers a completely integrated direct current (DC) power distribution solution that reliably and efficiently supports the deployment of direct current powered equipment in mission critical facilities throughout the world. Focused on enterprise grade power and cooling solutions for data centers and telecommunication facilities using direct current (DC), Validus delivers to its customers efficiency gains of up to 30 percent, overall fewer components translating to significantly increased data center power supply reliability, decreased hardware footprint, and decreased installation and maintenance costs.
